Another look at some delightful vehicles from the past, this time the fleet of Black Prince which was
established in 1969 by Brian and Sheila Crowther in Morley, West Yorkshire. He had been a former British Rail employee, and having
obtained his PSV licence, he set up what was then purely a coach hire business, the name being inspired by a statue of Edward, The Black
Prince which stands in the centre of Leeds. A partnership was established between Brian Crowther and another former British Rail
employee, Bert Colley, but for legal reasons the Colley share of the operation was in Stella Colley's (his wife) name. Their deaths in
1976 and 1978 respectively led to the Crowthers becoming sole owners of the business. Before the coach business was established, the
Black Prince name had also been used on six prototype army tanks built around 1944, five Royal Navy ships at various times from 1650 to
1962 (when the final one was scrapped), and also later on a preserved ex British Railways class 9F steam locomotive.
The first Crowther owned bus was former Douglas Corporation AEC Regent 50 (DMN 650), purchased in September
1967. Initially the vehicles were in a green and white livery, the colour application varying dependant on what the vehicle was, although
some received other liveries, or remained in their previous colours. After de-regulation in 1986, many Black Prince buses received a
yellow and red livery, possibly inspired by the Douglas colours. As for the Regent, it subsequently passed to other preservationist
owners and in 1986 it had returned to the Isle of Man and is believed to still exist there. A feature of the fleet over the years was the
purchase of used vehicles which originated from large operators (a small number were bought new), and a wide variety of liveries were
used, many of which are detailed below for each vehicle. The fleet numbering system used usually referred to the numerical part of each
vehicle's number plate, with prefix letters added where numbers were duplicated.
De-regulation of bus services in 1986 led to Black Prince starting services, from the Morley area,
competing with routes of Yorkshire Rider (the then recently rebranded West Yorkshire PTE). A takeover of the bus routes previously run
by Amberley of Pudsey led to the decision to retain their blue and white livery, while the Crowther's son David also established Leeds
Suburban buses, using a green and white livery, reminiscent of the early years of the company. It was reported that the company were
subjected to three operating license duration cuts by the Department of Transport between 1995 and 1997. A DoT hearing in July 1997
regarding serious vehicle maintenance defects resulted in the size of Black Prince's bus fleet and its operated services being halved.
Despite this, the fleet in 2004 stood at 40 vehicles, while the following year it was announced that the company would be taken over by
First Group (successors to Yorkshire Rider). The final day of Black Prince was July 31st 2005, it being the last family owned
independently run bus service in Leeds. The company founder, Brian Crowther, died in February 2008. Some of the fleet thereafter passed
into preservation, and eight buses have been produced as diecast models, some later redone with different route displays etc. A free
service operates in Leeds each Christmas Day using preserved Black Prince buses, the only buses in use on that day.
The fleet over the years comprised Leyland, Bedford, Ford, AEC, Daimler, Volvo and Scania vehicles in the
main, with a few other one offs. Apart from all the livery variations, the later years saw a variety of allover advert liveries applied
to double deckers. The vehicles below are listed by registration number in order of date of purchase, and liveries are listed where known.
My thanks to Bill Headley for supplying lots of additional detail of the fleet over the years. These listings are incomplete, so any
additional data or corrections, as always, would be welcome.

One of the 26 Leopards owned by Black Prince, 67 G 1 started out as a Plaxton Panorama bodied PSU3 in
1967 with Standerwick in Blackpool. Acquired by Black Prince in 1979, it was rebodied two years later with a Plaxton Supreme coach body.
A further five years service with Black Prince preceeded its sale to Camm, Nottingham, and from there it quickly moved on to Faherty
Coaches of Moycullen in Galway, getting a new reg number. The Black Prince name was still on the front in 1989. It returned to the U.K.

1989 (total 34)
On September 30th 1990, I visited the Black Prince premises, mainly to see the above vehicle and its sister LWB 380P.
In the event I not only photographed both Ailsas, but quite a few others as well. My interest in these was due to the fact they were
bodied in Dublin in the mid 1970s. Later on a third example (377) was also added to the fleet.
LWB 380P had been painted in this special livery to commemorate the company's 21 years of existance, the green and
white being the usual colours applied to purchases in the early years.
A third Ailsa seen on September 30th 1990 was this ex London Buses example which had been new to West Midlands PTE in
March 1976. It was originally one of a batch of 50, of which thirteen were bought by Black Prince.

POSTSCRIPT -- THE 21st CENTURY REPLICA
The sole lowheight Volvo Ailsa, Alexander bodied RTO 1R new to Derby City Transport was reported to be in
the Black Prince fleet between 2001 and 2004, during which it was restored to Derby livery and PSV standard, but not used in service.
Other sources state it was never owned by the Crowthers. Re-registered PRR 814R, it is now painted in full Black Prince livery of yellow
and red as a tribute to the company.
